Mr Chehal

Mr., Sabum Darren Chehal V (Oh Dan)

Mr. Chehal commenced his training in 1981 under the Instruction of Mr. Roger Koo who so happened to be the first Black Belt that Master Choy ever produced. The school, which was in Acton, was under the auspices of the UKTA at the time. Following a steady ascent through the ranks Mr. Chehal achieved the coveted rank of Black Belt 1st Dan in the March of 1984 at the tender age of 16years of age.

As a loyal student, Mr. Chehal followed his Instructor when he defected from the UKTA. in 1987. On losing faith in the direction of travel his Instructor had embarked on, Mr. Chehal ceased training till a chance meeting with one of Hillingdon TKD’s students (under Master Choy at the time) in an engineering apprenticeship led him to approach Master Choy at his Putney school in 1988.

Progressing from strength to strength in Putney, Mr. Chehal decided to take a step further in his commitment to TKD by opening up Kingston TKD School for the BUTF in the November 1988. The school remained quite successful with many of its students claiming national honours in championships, with its closure in 1994 being down to Mr. Chehal’s departure to Singapore for 5 years under contract to a building firm.

Throughout that period with the BUTF he excelled in national
(winning his division many a time) and international tournaments
having taken part in a prestigious tournament in Stockholm,
Sweden, that turned out to full contact.

His return to the United Kingdom in 1999 saw him sit and
re qualify as a BUTF Instructor prior to opening
Canary Wharf School of TKD for the BUTF in 2001.

One can only but admire the tenacity and commitment shown
to the furtherance of this beloved art of ours called Taekwon-Do.
