I have known Grand Master Choy all my life, as I’m lucky enough to have had him as my Instructor and Godfather.
I started my training at the Hillingdon school of TKD back in 1980 with the then Mr. Choy 4th Dan when I was 13 years old.
In those days the classes were huge with 6 rows across and 3-4 rows deep, filled with Black belts.
I remember my first lesson, I went with my late grandmother and my 2 brothers it was quite daunting seeing so many people doing amazing things, it was a scary experience until I saw a familiar face in Master Choy. 'Hello Uncle' I said, 'call me Sir' came the stern reply. You see, even though I was 'family' he never treated me any different from anyone else he had in class in fact I thought he worked me harder but for a good reason. I would have never experienced the highs in winning tournaments, opening successful clubs and most of all making me the person that I am today.
I have never trained so hard in my life when I was at the 'Hillingdon' school. Especially when we had to spar. Black belts making one line and all the coloured belts making the other. So there you had it an hour of sparring, each fight against an animal of a black belt trying to take your head off! After surviving one fight you would see who you had to fight next and it was demoralising because it was black belt after black belt. Sometimes I would feign an asthma attack to get some sort of rest and through those fake attacks I would watch Master Choy dispose of these black belts when he sparred against them. He was awesome, a leggy fighter and very calm he would make it look so easy. Protection wasn't as cutting edge in those days, all we wore were flimsy instep guards a small fist protectors, so broken noses, arms, legs and toes were common. Happy days!!
Grand Master Choy has also taught so many of the Masters that are present today with other organisations for e.g. Master Trevor Nicholls 8th dan, Master Wayne Brown 7th Dan, Master Roger Koo 7th Dan, Master Marshall Pereira 7th Dan, Master Ted Wolf 7th Dan, Master Jamie Hogan 7th Dan and our very own Master T Y Au 8th Dan, Master L S Sangha and Master A Manning 7th Dan, not to mention all the 6th, 5th, 4th Dans he has nurtured through time.
So there you have Grand Master Choy's legacy and what an impressive one at that. We all have to thank Grand Master Choy for his services to Tae Kwon Do and how it has affected all our lives.
Be proud that we have a most worthy Grandmaster not only in our federation and in charge of it but in the world.
Congratulations Master Choy on your promotion to IX Dan 'Grandmaster'.
